Description
Before and After School Students Vintage Glass Plate Negative Vertical.
This image is from the Glass Plate Negative Series.
Glass plates were in use for well over a 100 years due to their image quality over the newly inventive soft flexible negatives.
This series shows us how Photography Captures a Moment In Time that can be enjoyed regardless of today’s actual date.
Note: I would be willing to talk to anyone that may want to take on the restoration project of these glass plates.
Back in the early 1980’s while I was wandering around the I-80 flea market in Illinois.
I spotted a small cardboard box under a vendor table containing over 75 glass plate negatives.
The plates were wrapped in well aged yellowing wax paper. Some plates were sticking to the wax paper and the plate emulsion was separating from the glass. Also a dozen or more of the plates were cracked into multiple pieces.
Almost all of the plates are showing some signs of emulsion loss, discoloration or spotting.
A decision was made that the physical plate restoration was beyond my skill level.
Instead I would turn my negative plates into positive images.
The process was fairly straight forward.
Separate all of the plates into two (2) groups (horizontal and vertical orientation).
Lay each plate regardless of it’s current condition on a light box and shoot the lighted plate image with a digital camera.
Place all badly damaged plates off to the side and continue working with the remaining plates.
Using a software process change the new negative plate images into positive Black and White images.
No attempt at this time would be made to remove blemishes, dark spots, hot spots or any other imperfections from the image.
Due to plate deterioration, adjustments would only be made to the contrast, brightness and cropping of the images to remove as much damage as possible.
Next Sort (group) the images into categories.
Horizontal orientation will contain:
Couples; Families; Girls; Groups; Guys; Motorcycle man; School Classes and Working People.
Vertical orientation will contain:
Church People; Couples; Families; Girls; Guys and School Classes.
Then display the images in multiple ways.
1. As a standalone Black and White positive image.
2. As a Before and After image with the before negative image scaled down and overlaid on the new positive image.
Personal Note: For as long as human beings have been roaming our planet the recording of our thoughts and surroundings has been a rewarding challenge to many inventors and Billions of users.
Today we live in the most data collection and storage hardware capabilities available to mankind at this time.
The challenge of recording and preserving our past will always need fresh passion from a younger upcoming generation.
I hope the early photography years are always on someone’s project list.
From my eyes, through the view finder to the click of the shutter. I hope you enjoy these moments in time that have been captured.
This photograph has been Digitally Enhanced to help this image to be considered a unique moment in time.
Note: If an image has the Fine Art America (FAA) watermark in the lower right hand corner it will NOT appear on any print you purchase.
Abbreviations used in some image titles include: BW = Black and white; Composite(s) = 2 or more images; HDR = High-dynamic-range imaging; Mixed = Multiple layers were used; PA = Photo Art; Raised = The image was extruded; SQ = Square Format and SC = Selective Coloring.
